Asphalt Beach Q&A

When can I attend a lesson?

We hold beginner lessons Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:30. Advanced lessons are by appointment only. You must call at least one day in advance to confirm the lesson you want to attend.

How long are the lessons?

Each lesson will last around 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the size and skill level of the class.

How many lessons will I need to learn how to skate?

One lesson is normally enough to teach you the basics. After practicing on your own, you may repeat any regularly scheduled lesson as often as you need without an additional charge.

What will I learn in the beginner lesson?

We'll teach you how to go (stride 1), stop (heel braking), and turn (a-frame). We also cover skate maintenance and speed control for going down hills.

What will I learn in the advanced lesson?

We'll teach you how to go faster (stride 2), stop fancier (spin stop), and turn quicker (parallel turn). We also cover a little bit of backward movement (backward swizzles).

What do I do if it is raining?

There are no skate lessons if it is raining or the pavement is wet. It is too dangerous and it may harm your bearings.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

YES!!! You must wear all protective gear, including a helmet, during the lesson.

How do you get certified to teach inline skating?

The International Inline Skating Association (IISA) hold certification programs in many cities during a year. We have completed a written test, a skills test, and a practical teaching test to become certified. Steve has even done this twice to become a level II certified instructor. The IISA also provides insurance for its instructors.
